golden lancehead.jpg Posted by: sreekar aihil 1222 days ago
The biggest reason the island is so deserted is that these snakes cover the island. Experts say there’s one golden lancehead here per square meter (1.2 square yards). Each golden lancehead’s venom is five times more potent that of its closest relative, the fer-de-lance, responsible for most snakebite deaths in South America.

Eastern diamond back rattle sn... Posted by: sreekar aihil 1222 days ago
Diamondback Rattlesnakes are the largest of all North American Venomous Reptiles and is in the family Crotalidae. These impressive snakes are not only deadly, but incredibly beautiful as well. The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) found primarily in Florida, Louisiana and N. Carolina, in my opinion is one of the most stunning of any rattlesnake species. Unlike its counterpart the Western Diamondback (Crotalus atrox) at home in the arid Southwestern deserts; the Eastern Diamondback prefers Florida’s high humidity and Palmetto Palm Tree covered flatwoods. This magnificently colored venomous snake has even been documented swimming in salt water down in the Florida Keys.

Corn snake.jpg Posted by: sreekar aihil 1222 days ago
Corn snakes, Elaphe guttata guttata are one of the hardiest species of snake to keep in captivity. Corn snakes come in a huge variety of colors and patterns and as Joe Pierce of Snakes Alive! says "They are the guppies of the snake world". Corns snakes are bred by the tens of thousands each year by private breeders and hobbiests and I STRONGLY recommend that you buy a captive born animal. This not only helps the survival of the species in the wild, it also greatly increases your chances of getting a healthy, feeding animal.

common lance head.jpg Posted by: sreekar aihil 1222 days ago
The Common Lancehead is probably the most feared poisonous snake in tropical South America.
In part this is because, although it is primarily a forest snake, it also invades agricultural land. It is aggressive and relies on its camouflage when hunting prey often lying in wait along paths such as is seen in these photos. This is a problem for birders who tend to look up far more often than they look down!
Its prey consists of small mammals, birds, lizards and smaller snakes. The warm blooded animals are detected by sensing their body heat by means of a pit organ which is situated between the snake's eye and nostril.
It can grow up to about 2 metres (6 feet) in length and comes in a variety of subdued colours such as grey, brown, green and olive. It gets its name from the pointed, triangular shape of its head like that of a lance.

Bushmaster.jpg Posted by: sreekar aihil 1223 days ago
Black mambas are one of Africa’s most dangerous and feared snakes. Nothing is truer when you are standing in front of big black mamba hissing loudly, mouth gaping, striking rapidly in your direction. But are all the frightening stories about black mambas true? I don’t think so. On the African continent many myths are told about these wonderful creatures. Stories abound about black mambas chasing people for miles, attacking when they notice you and visiting houses to kill every single person inside. All are exaggerations. Black mambas are not as fierce as people describe them. In captivity black mambas are docile and appreciative animals that show a fantastic and active behaviour when housed in a big enclosure the right way.

A completely albinistic snake has pink eyes and lacks all the dark colors usually evident in the normal pattern of the species to which it belongs, this is known as an absence of melanin. Albinism probably occurs to the extent of one-tenth to one-hundredth of one per cent of the population.
